This reproduction of a Japanese print depicts Yanagishima Island, also known as "Willow Island". The river scene shows the Hashimotoya restaurant and the distinctive red pavilion of the Nichiren Hōshōji temple, accessible via the convex Yanagibashi bridge. The treatment of reflections on the water and the presence of small boats suggest the importance of river transport in the leisure and spirituality of ancient Edo.
Created by Utagawa Hiroshige in April 1857 for his series One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, this plate pays tribute to a prized devotional site, notably by the famous artist Hokusai. The graphic style is marked by great finesse in the representation of architecture and an atmospheric mist that reveals in the distance the silhouette of Mount Tsukuba, testifying to a perfectly mastered spatial composition.
This illustration offers a visual journey into the religious and social past of Japan. It is perfectly suited for an oriental art collection or as a study piece on traditional Japanese architecture. Its balance between human life and natural elements makes it an object of contemplation rich in historical details.
