Hiroshige Print: The Palace Hill at Shinagawa

This faithful reproduction presents a view of the palace hill at Shinagawa, from the encyclopedic work of Utagawa Hiroshige. The visual captures a spring landscape with its cherry blossoms (sakura) dominating a river overlooked by a small wooden bridge. The composition uses winding paths to structure the space, offering a peaceful vision of this iconic site of Edo, now Tokyo.

Originally created in April 1856, this plate is part of the One Hundred Famous Views of Edo. The location, Goten-yama, was historically linked to the shogun's palace. The artist subtly integrates factual details, such as stone extraction marks on the hill, used to fortify the coast against outside pressures of the era. This blend of landscape aesthetics and historical testimony defines Hiroshige's genius.

This antique illustration is intended for those wishing to explore traditional Japanese culture through its most renowned landscapes. Its chromatic richness, blending the green of the hills with the pink of the flowers, makes it a captivating collector's piece, representative of the visual poetry of the ukiyo-e movement and everyday life in Edo.
