This reproduction of a 19th-century engraving illustrates a maritime scene of right whale hunting. The image captures the imposing silhouette of the cetacean facing whalers and sailing ships, in a dynamic black and white composition that highlights the strength of the lines and the historical atmosphere of this marine activity.
Derived from the plates of Charles d'Orbigny's Dictionnaire Universel d'Histoire Naturelle, this illustration falls within the tradition of major scientific and documentary expeditions of the era. It reflects the encyclopedic vision that sought to catalog not only species, but also their interaction with man.
This antique print is a privileged choice for enthusiasts of maritime history and marine mammals. It offers a valuable visual testimony of navigation techniques and oceanic fauna, bringing an erudite and contemplative dimension to a living space.
