Ichthyology plate: Coral Siganus and Surgeonfish - d'Orbigny

This reproduction of an antique ichthyological plate represents two marine fish specimens: the coral siganus and the jewel surgeonfish. The anatomical details, including diagrams of the dentition and ventral fins, bear witness to the educational vocation of the original work. The shades of yellow and black, from the enhanced engraving, offer a striking visual contrast faithful to 19th-century naturalist descriptions.

The original document is part of the Dictionnaire Universel d'Histoire Naturelle directed by Charles d'Orbigny between 1841 and 1849. This reference work mobilized the best engravers to document global fauna. The precise representation of these tropical fish illustrates the taxonomic classification effort undertaken by scientists like Cuvier and Valenciennes, whose works served as the basis for these illustrations.

Perfectly suited for interior decoration inspired by the marine world, this plate combines scientific rigor and graphic elegance. It invites contemplation of biological forms and integrates harmoniously into a set of thematic frames. It is an ideal collector's item for those wishing to celebrate the heritage of natural history and the art of antique engraving.
