Ichthyology Plate: Ribbonfish and Red Bandfish — Orbigny

This reproduction of an ichthyological plate features two remarkable fish species: Spinola's trachypterus (Trachypterus spinolae) and the red bandfish (Cepola rubescens). The image highlights the elongated, ribbon-like shape of these species, magnified by colorful stripes and prominent fins. The chromatic palette uses yellows, reds, and grays to emphasize the morphological singularity of these marine creatures.

Taken from the atlas of Charles d'Orbigny's Dictionnaire Universel d'Histoire Naturelle, this illustration falls within the great tradition of inventorying living creatures in the 19th century. Each engraving stroke is designed to faithfully translate biological reality while maintaining the visual harmony characteristic of scholarly works from this period. This work reflects the encyclopedic ambition to document all known species with exemplary technical rigor.

Intended for marine biology enthusiasts and lovers of antique engravings, this reproduction constitutes an elegant decorative collector's item. It allows for the exploration of the fascinating diversity of the seabed through the lens of the history of science. Its format and graphic precision make it an ideal choice to enrich a study space or a thematic gallery on the natural world.
