This reproduction highlights an ornithological print by the Japanese artist Kōno Bairei. The plate is entirely dedicated to a golden pheasant, whose brightly colored plumage is the main subject. The artist has paid particular attention to details, from the yellow crest to the red and green feathers, capturing the bird's posture.
Created at the end of the 19th century, this work fits into the great tradition of 'kacho-ga', paintings of flowers and birds. Kōno Bairei applies his rigorous observation method here, creating a representation that is both naturalist and highly decorative. The treatment of colors is emblematic of his style which marked the Meiji era.
