This print is a reproduction of the famous Lion Gate at Mycenae. The illustration highlights the monumentality of Cyclopean architecture and the finesse of the sculpted relief, the sole vestige of monumental Aegean statuary. Edward Dodwell's drawing stands out for its documentary precision, capturing the texture of the stone and the majesty of the ruins with great fidelity.
Taken from the work Views in Greece, this plate bears witness to Edward Dodwell's travels in the early 19th century. It represents a historical document of primary importance, freezing the state of the site of Mycenae well before Heinrich Schliemann's famous excavations. Each engraving in this collection was designed to combine aesthetic value with emerging archaeological rigor, documenting a heritage that was little explored at the time.
Intended for enthusiasts of archaeology, art history, and ancient Greece, this reproduction constitutes both an object of study and a decorative piece. It evokes the grandeur of the Mycenaean civilization and the fascination of European travelers for the vestiges of the classical world.
