This reproduction of a 1932 naturalist plate illustrates the Kuri ferry at Funabori. The scene depicts wooden dwellings bordering a waterway, dominated by the imposing presence of a lush tree. The composition relies on a visual balance between architectural structures and plant elements, typical of rural landscape studies.

Hasui Kawase here captures a transitional atmosphere, characteristic of the encyclopedic intent of the Shin-hanga movement which documented picturesque places in Japan. The careful stroke and use of brown, blue, and green hues reflect the realistic and sensitive aesthetics of the period, favoring the spirit of the place over abstraction.

This illustration constitutes a precious historical document on Japanese architecture and river landscapes of the last century. It perfectly suits an art print collection or an interior decoration seeking a calm and orderly evocation of nature and traditional habitat.
