This art reproduction depicts a fisherman's house on stilts by the water, a scene of daily life captured by Kōno Bairei. The composition focuses on documentary details: the wooden structure of the dwelling, the suspended fishing nets, and the small moored boat. The general atmosphere is one of simple daily life, in direct contact with the aquatic environment.
Created by Kōno Bairei (1844-1895), this print illustrates a facet of his work less known than his botanical or ornithological plates. It falls within the tradition of ukiyo-e, which depicts landscapes and scenes of daily life. The work testifies to the artist's interest in people and their activities, set against the backdrop of a modernizing Japan during the Meiji era.
This illustration is aimed at lovers of Japanese history, enthusiasts of traditional architecture, and those seeking evocative art. It offers a window into rural life in 19th-century Japan and makes a decorative piece with authentic, discreet charm.
