This reproduction of a print by Kōno Bairei features a flowering plum tree, a classic subject in Japanese art. The artist captures the delicate moment when small red flowers dot the still-bare branches. The composition, of great sobriety, uses empty space to highlight the fine and precise tracing of the wood, in a naturalistic style characteristic of the master.

Kōno Bairei (1844-1895) was one of the great masters of kacho-ga painting (paintings of flowers and birds) of the Meiji era. His work, at the crossroads of traditional techniques and quasi-scientific observation, bears witness to a deep connection with nature. This plate illustrates his flair for capturing the vitality and ephemeral beauty of the plant world.

This illustration appeals to lovers of Japanese art and print collectors. It invites contemplation and brings a touch of naturalistic elegance to an interior, recalling the symbolism of renewal and perseverance associated with the plum tree.
