Japanese Woodblock Print of a Young Artist with Brush by Kōno Bairei

This art reproduction is taken from a Japanese woodblock print by Kōno Bairei depicting a young woman. The scene, imbued with tranquility, shows a seated artist with a focused gaze, holding a brush in her hand. Contextual elements, such as a green box and yellow flowers, complete this intimate composition. The treatment of the long black hair and clothing patterns demonstrates a great mastery of drawing.

Although Kōno Bairei (1844-1895) is primarily celebrated for his illustrations of fauna and flora (kachō-ga), this print shows him tackling the genre of female portraiture (bijin-ga). The work illustrates the central place of arts, such as calligraphy or painting, in Meiji-era Japanese culture. It captures a moment of contemplation and creation, revealing the artist's versatility.

This illustration will appeal to lovers of Japanese art, portraits, and cultural scenes. Through its grace and evocative subject, it constitutes an elegant piece of wall decoration, ideal for an office, library, or living room, bringing a touch of refinement and history.
