Japanese Woodblock Print of an Ise Prawn by Kōno Bairei

This reproduction features a naturalist illustration of an Ise prawn, from the work of Japanese artist Kōno Bairei. The subject is depicted with great zoological precision, where every detail, from antennae to legs, is rendered by a fine and confident black line. The brownish coloration of the crustacean subtly stands out against the plain beige background, in a composition that highlights scientific observation.

Kōno Bairei (1844-1895) was a major figure in the Nihonga school during the Meiji era. His work is characterized by a fusion between traditional Japanese techniques and a realistic approach inspired by the West. His plates, like this one, were not only works of art but also precious documents for the study of fauna and flora, bearing witness to the rigor of his gaze.

This print is aimed at lovers of Japanese art, natural history enthusiasts, and collectors of zoological illustrations. Through its refined aesthetics and documentary precision, it constitutes a singular decorative piece, perfect for a modern cabinet of curiosities, an office, or a minimalist interior.
