Kikyo Gate Print (1929) by Hasui Kawase

This reproduction of a print dated 1929 represents the Kikyo Gate, an imposing fortified structure bordered by cyclopean stone walls. Hasui Kawase immortalizes here Japanese defensive architecture reflecting in a calm body of water with shades of green. The blue sky, crossed by clouds tinted orange by the setting sun, provides a striking chromatic contrast with the mineral solidity of the building.

The work testifies to Kawase's encyclopedic intention to document Japan's historical sites through the shin-hanga movement. The strength of the line underlines the permanence of fortifications against the passage of time, while the balanced composition between water, stone, and sky evokes rigorous formal harmony. It is a naturalist plate where architectural precision meets the poetry of meteorological atmospheres.

This illustration is aimed at enthusiasts of Japanese feudal history and military architecture. It allows observation of the finesse of details in traditional roofs and stonework. Its documentary value makes it a prime element for a collection dedicated to Japan's heritage landscapes, offering both a technical and evocative vision of the Nipponese past.
