This reproduction of a naturalist plate features two distinct rodents: the Canadian Beaver and the Jerboa. The animals are illustrated in wild life scenes, capturing their characteristic postures and respective habitats. The finesse of the line highlights the fur and morphological traits, served by a sober palette composed of browns, grays, and beiges, typical of 19th-century engravings.
The work comes from the Dictionnaire Universel d'Histoire Naturelle, a monumental work by Charles d'Orbigny published between 1841 and 1849. This collection is famous for its encyclopedic approach, which marked the history of scientific popularization. The plate perfectly illustrates the French naturalist style, where aesthetics serve the transmission of zoological knowledge regarding global mammals.
This reproduction is ideal for creating a scholarly and classic atmosphere. It is as well suited for a study as for a living room, offering a visual testimony of wildlife as it was studied and represented by naturalists of the last century. A privileged choice for lovers of historical documents and mammalogy.
