Mammal Plate: Aye-aye and Sloth by d'Orbigny

This reproduction features two mammals with singular morphological characteristics: the Cheiromys (Aye-aye) of Madagascar and the Bradypus (sloth). The 19th-century naturalist illustration captures the sloth hanging from a branch, highlighting its arboreal lifestyle, while the Aye-aye is depicted in the lower part. The precision of the line makes it possible to observe the texture of the fur and the anatomical details of these species often little-known at the time.

The image comes from the iconographic corpus of the Dictionnaire Universel d'Histoire Naturelle by Charles d'Orbigny, published between 1841 and 1849. This dictionary represented excellence in scientific popularization, combining descriptions by Cuvier and other great names in science with plates of remarkable artistic quality. The style is characteristic of period zoological illustration, where aesthetics served the transmission of knowledge.

This antique plate is an excellent choice for zoology enthusiasts and collectors of rare images. It integrates harmoniously into a workspace or a library, bringing a historical and naturalist dimension. The contemplation of these exotic species, as they were perceived in the last century, offers an intellectual and visual journey into the heart of biodiversity.
