Naturalist Butterfly Plate: Duponchel's and Thais Butterflies

This reproduction of a 19th-century naturalist plate accurately illustrates several species of Lepidoptera, notably Duponchel's butterfly and the Cerisy's Thais. The composition features adult specimens alongside their caterpillars and developmental stages, offering a detailed overview of the entomology of the era. The line work is extremely fine, highlighting the complex wing patterns where yellow, red, and black blend against a neutral background.

The original work comes from the Dictionnaire Universel d'Histoire Naturelle, directed by the naturalist Charles d'Orbigny between 1841 and 1849. This monumental encyclopedia aimed to catalog living organisms with exemplary scientific rigor for its time. The engravings, created by the best illustrators of the period, now constitute a precious testimony to scholarly aesthetics and the classification efforts of the mid-19th century.

Intended for lovers of natural history and classical decor, this antique plate brings a touch of erudition to any interior. It can be observed for the precision of its zoological details or collected as part of a thematic series on insects. Its documentary value and chromatic balance make it an ideal decorative piece for a contemporary cabinet of curiosities.
