Naturalist Engraving Gesner's Tulip by Pierre-Joseph Redouté (1827)

This reproduction of a naturalist engraving brilliantly illustrates three specimens of Gesner's tulips. The image presents a tulip with deep purple hues alongside two yellow flowers delicately striped with red. The strength of Pierre-Joseph Redouté's line allows for a rich iconographic analysis, where the hierarchy of plant elements and the curvature of the stems create a remarkable visual dynamism within an airy composition against a beige background.

Extracted from the collection Choix des plus belles fleurs published in 1827, this plate testifies to the excellence of scientific illustration under the Restoration. Pierre-Joseph Redouté depicts Tulipa Gesneriana, introduced to Europe in the 16th century. The graphic style, combining precision of detail and harmony of colors, reflects the encyclopedic spirit of a century fascinated by the acclimatization of exotic species.

Destined for collectors of antique prints as well as lovers of naturalist decoration, this plate offers undeniable documentary value. It finds its place in a study room or a living room, where it can be admired for its technical finesse. This illustration invites the rediscovery of horticultural history through the gaze of a master of botanical art.
