Naturalist illustration: Green Iguana and Green Lizard - d'Orbigny

This reproduction of a herpetology plate accurately illustrates a Green Iguana (Iguana tuberculata) and a Green Lizard (Lacerta viridis). Taken from Charles d'Orbigny's Dictionnaire Universel d'Histoire Naturelle, this scientific composition contrasts the scales and skin textures of these two reptiles. The chromatic work highlights the vividness of the green pigments and the fineness of the scales characteristic of each species.

Published under the direction of Charles d'Orbigny in the 19th century, this work is part of a monumental scientific popularization project. At that time, illustration played a major role in describing the diversity of the living world. The layout, associating an exotic species with a European species, emphasizes the desire for exhaustiveness and comparison typical of Victorian-era naturalists.

Ideal for zoology enthusiasts or vintage decor, this illustration brings a touch of scientific curiosity to a contemporary environment. It constitutes a fascinating testimony to the art of observation in the century of great explorations. The faithful reproduction of details allows one to appreciate the graphic complexity of these specimens often represented in their symbolic biotope.
