This reproduction is a zoological illustration by Japanese artist Kōno Bairei, depicting a mebaru fish. The plate is distinguished by its great anatomical precision, detailing the scales, fins, and the animal's expression with an open mouth. The fine line drawing and subtle colors reflect rigorous observation, characteristic of scientific illustration.

Painter and illustrator of the Meiji era, Kōno Bairei (1844-1895) excelled in representing nature in all its forms. Although often associated with flora and birds, his work also includes precise studies of Japanese aquatic fauna. His works are a bridge between traditional Japanese art and the methodical approach of Western science.

This print is aimed at enthusiasts of ichthyology, collectors of Japanese art, and fans of antique naturalist illustrations. In decoration, it brings a touch of authenticity and curiosity, perfect for an office, a library, or a modern cabinet of curiosities.
