Naturalist plate: Flying Exocoetus and Spotted Seahorse - d'Orbigny

This reproduction presents two iconic figures of aquatic fauna: the Flying Exocoetus (Exocoetus volitans) and the Spotted Seahorse (Hippocampus punctatus). Taken from an antique naturalist plate, the illustration captures the morphological singularity of these species, from the oversized pectoral fins of the flying fish to the complex structure of the seahorse. The fineness of the line highlights the diversity of biological adaptation strategies in the marine environment.

The illustration is extracted from the Dictionnaire Universel d'Histoire Naturelle, Charles d'Orbigny's major work published in the 1840s. This scientific corpus remains a reference for the aesthetic quality of its engravings. Through these representations, the 19th century sought to catalog the living world with almost photographic precision, while retaining an artistic dimension specific to antique prints.

This piece is an invitation to explore the curiosities of the ocean from a reading room or a living room. Its documentary value and vintage charm make it a privileged choice for refined wall decoration. It appeals equally to collectors of scientific images and amateurs of marine themes seeking to enhance French naturalist heritage.
