This reproduction highlights a naturalist print by Kōno Bairei, dedicated to marine specimens. The composition juxtaposes a conch and a starfish, whose textures and volumes are rendered with great finesse. The precise line and sober color nuances on a plain background focus attention on the morphological details of both creatures.
A prolific illustrator of the Meiji era, Kōno Bairei (1844-1895) explored many aspects of the natural world, beyond his famous illustrations of birds and flowers. This plate testifies to his interest in marine life and his ability to apply a quasi-scientific method to his art, while retaining a purely Japanese sensibility in the balance of the composition.
This work is particularly suited for lovers of marine biology, collectors of antique scientific illustrations, and those wishing to create a cabinet of curiosities atmosphere. It is a choice piece to adorn the walls of an office or library.
