Naturalist Plate of Salamanders by Charles d'Orbigny

This reproduction of a scientific plate illustrates the Spotted Salamander and the Alleghany Mountain Salamander. The work contrasts the yellow and black patterns of the land salamander with the dark hues of the aquatic specimen. Taken from Charles d'Orbigny's monumental work, this engraving is distinguished by the strength of its line and the precision of the epidermal details, offering a highly faithful naturalist vision.

Published during the 19th century, this plate fits into a tradition of high-quality popularization. The scientific aesthetics of the era are magnified here by a composition that prioritizes elements to facilitate comparative study. The Spotted Salamander, an emblematic subject of European herpetology, is represented with a graphic authority that highlights the expertise of the draftsmen and engravers who collaborated on the Universal Dictionary.

Perfectly suited for decoration with a scholarly character, this reproduction invites the contemplation of the amphibian world. It appeals to naturalists and amateurs of antique graphics alike. Framed, it becomes a focal point of documentary interest, ideal for punctuating a space dedicated to reading, science, or the collection of curiosities.
