This reproduction of an antique illustration depicts the Cassowary (Casuarius galeatus) in a tropical landscape. The contrast between the bird's deep black plumage and the bright hues of its neck — blue, red and orange — is rendered with great precision. The composition places the animal in a palm tree environment, evoking its natural habitat.
The visual comes from the Dictionnaire Universel d'Histoire Naturelle edited by Charles d'Orbigny. This monumental 19th-century work aimed to catalog the living world with taxonomic rigor, while entrusting the illustration to artists capable of capturing the morphological singularity of each species.
This print is a valuable visual resource for ornithological study or the decoration of a study room. It allows to admire the historical representation of an exotic bird through the prism of past scientific exploration.
