This reproduction of a naturalist plate illustrates the Hippopotamus (Hippopotamus amphibius) in its aquatic habitat. The composition depicts the animal in the foreground, on the bank, while other specimens move among the reeds in the background. The drawing emphasizes the power of the animal through careful work on shadows and skin textures.

Taken from the Dictionnaire Universel d'Histoire Naturelle edited by Charles d'Orbigny in the 19th century, this print testifies to the monumental scientific synthesis effort of the era. The original engraving was created to accurately document pachyderm mammals, combining zoological rigor and artistic finesse specific to French encyclopedic illustration.

This antique illustration is aimed at natural history enthusiasts and collectors of scientific images. As a documentary object, it allows to appreciate the evolution of biological knowledge while offering a strong visual subject for a study or a cabinet of curiosities.
