This reproduction of a naturalist plate by Kōno Bairei illustrates a sparrow perched on a blooming wisteria branch. The work, taken from a 19th-century botanical illustration collection, reflects rigorous observation of Japanese flora and fauna. The composition highlights the contrasts between the bird's plumage and the floral clusters.
Kōno Bairei, master of the Kyoto school, marked the Meiji era with his dedication to the kachō-ga genre. This print combines scientific precision and graphic elegance, seeking to document biodiversity with great finesse. The author's encyclopedic intention shines through in every detail of the line.
This ancient illustration can be integrated into a naturalist collection or serve as sober wall decor. It invites the study of traditional Japanese nature's shapes and colors.
