This reproduction of a naturalist engraving accurately illustrates two species of reptiles: the pike-nosed caiman (Alligator Lucius) and the wall platydactyl. The drawing emphasizes the distinctive textures of the scales and the specific morphology of these saurians, using a palette of green, black and gray for a visual rendering that is both rigorous and elegant.
Included in the prestigious Dictionnaire Universel d'Histoire Naturelle by Charles d'Orbigny (1841-1849), this work reflects French excellence in scientific illustration in the 19th century. It testifies to the encyclopedic ambition to document reptiles with absolute anatomical fidelity, necessary for the taxonomic classification of the time.
This antique print is perfectly suited for a herpetology collection or an interior decoration with a strong character. It offers a captivating reading of the diversity of living things, transforming a historical scientific observation into an object of documentary and artistic contemplation.
