This reproduction of a malacological plate presents a selection of molluscs and shells, including the elephant tusk shell, the common limpet, and the chiton. The image comes from the Dictionnaire Universel d'Histoire Naturelle coordinated by Charles d'Orbigny in the mid-19th century.
The plate displays the diversity of calcareous structures and marine forms with remarkable technical precision. This synthesis work, carried out between 1841 and 1849, aimed to document species with encyclopedic rigor, thus offering a precious testimony on the state of biological knowledge of the era.
This vintage illustration is particularly suited for marine biology enthusiasts and lovers of naturalistic studies. It can be integrated into a marine or scientifically inspired decoration for its documentary aspect and graphical finesse.
