Plate of Brown Veined-Wing Butterflies, Kamisaka Sekka

This Japanese engraving reproduction illustrates a flight of butterflies in shades of brown and beige. Taken from the work Chō senshu published in 1903, this plate is distinguished by the meticulous treatment of the wing veins, recalling the delicate structure of groundcherries. The illustration favors a naturalist approach where the precision of the line underlines the fragility and complexity of the organic motifs of each represented specimen.

The artist Kamisaka Sekka uses the codes of the Rimpa movement here to transform a biological study into a major decorative work. The overall composition, although centered on the naturalist subject, reveals a concern for balance and chromatic harmony. This engraving bears witness to the encyclopedic spirit of the Meiji era, seeking to combine rigorous scientific observation with refined traditional aesthetics.

Intended for collectors of natural history plates and graphic art enthusiasts, this reproduction integrates elegantly into a classic or modern interior. Its palette of neutral, earthy colors invites calm observation. It constitutes a historical testimony to the know-how of early last-century Japanese illustrators in documenting fauna.
