This reproduction presents a documentary lithograph depicting two types of watercraft from the island of Tonga Tabou: the Calié (or Kalia) double canoe and the large Vaca outrigger canoe. Coming from the corpus of the Astrolabe voyage atlas, the image details with precision the steering systems and framing of these Oceanian vessels.

The original work was produced under the direction of Jules Dumont d'Urville during his scientific expedition conducted between 1826 and 1829. The drawings of François Edmond Pâris bring essential technical rigor, bearing witness to the 19th-century French ethnographic approach to the maritime know-how of the Pacific.

This illustration is intended for enthusiasts of naval history and Polynesian cultures. Used in interior decoration or for an iconographic collection, it allows for the observation of traditional Oceanian naval engineering through a historical scientific prism.
