This documentary plate reproduces the comparative study of watercraft from Manado and Lake Tondano, located on the island of Sulawesi in the Celebes. The illustration brings together profile and plan views, highlighting the structural differences between sea-going canoes and those intended for navigation in fresh waters.
The original surveys were recorded by François Edmond Pâris during the voyage of the corvette Astrolabe (1826–1829). This major expedition of the French Navy allowed for the publication of plates of great scientific rigor, blending the art of lithography and expertise in naval architecture.
This specimen is a precious iconographic resource for understanding the vernacular navigation techniques of the Indonesian archipelago in the 19th century. It fits perfectly into a sober interior decoration project or a collection of scientific prints.
