Plate of the Gate of Dendera - Illustration by David Roberts

This reproduction illustrates the Gate of Dendera, a monumental structure marking the entrance to the sacred enclosure of the Dendera temple. The drawing by David Roberts highlights the remarkable preservation of carved details, notably the winged sun discs and rows of hieroglyphs. The presence of figures at the foot of the building allows one to grasp the monumentality of this stone architecture.

Dating from the Roman period of Egyptian art, this gate is represented here with documentary fidelity that includes traces of original polychromy and Greek inscriptions on the cornice. The original 1838 lithograph captures the state of the site before major clearing campaigns, offering a precious testimony on the historical appearance of the religious complex of Isis.
