Plate of three black and green butterflies - Kamisaka Sekka

This reproduction of a naturalist illustration comes from the famous collection Chō senshu (A Thousand Varieties of Butterflies). The plate features three butterflies with dark wings adorned with symmetrical patterns in tones of green and orange. The triangular composition against a neutral beige background highlights the rigor and balance of this chromatic study.

The original work was conceived by the artist Kamisaka Sekka in 1903. A central figure of the modern Rimpa movement, Sekka offers here a vision that combines scientific observation with a refined decorative aesthetic. The stark contrast between the deep black of the wings and the vibrant touches of color testifies to the graphic mastery of the Meiji period.

This illustration is intended for lovers of Japanese engravings and entomology. As a decorative object or collectible piece, it offers a visual testimony to the elegance of traditional Japanese design. Its formal sobriety allows it to integrate into various observational contexts or interior exhibitions.
