Port Vathy and the Capital of Ithaca - Views in Greece by Edward Dodwell

This reproduction presents a detailed view of the Port of Vathy, capital of the island of Ithaca. The illustration, of great topographical rigor, depicts the natural haven sheltered by green hills. The composition captures with finesse the maritime activity, with ships anchored in calm waters, and the local architecture of white houses terraced on the slopes, beneath Mount Neritos.

Taken from the famous collection Views in Greece, this plate is a testimony to the documentary work of the artist and archaeologist Edward Dodwell in the early 19th century. Created from drawings made on the spot during his travels in 1801 and 1805, it illustrates the fusion of landscape art and a scientific approach. The work fits into the current of picturesque travel, aiming to document the state of Greek mythical sites for an erudite European public.

This print is aimed at lovers of history, geography, and classical literature, offering an authentic look at Homer's Greece seen by travelers of the past. Ideal for a sober and intellectual decoration, it invites the contemplation of a landscape steeped in myth. It constitutes a choice piece for a collection dedicated to great travel narratives or representations of the Mediterranean.
