Print Ascent of Mount Fuji (Shojin tozan) - Hokusai

This reproduction of a naturalist plate illustrates the pilgrim ascent of the rocky slopes of Mount Fuji. The image details a group of figures progressing along the steep flank of the sacred mountain, highlighting the mineral texture and roughness of the high-altitude landscape. In the background, the silhouette of the summit dominates the scene, emphasizing the monumental scale of the ascent against human devotion.

The work is part of the editorial set Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji conceived by Katsushika Hokusai in the early 1830s. This polychrome woodblock print moves away from urban views to focus on a spiritual and physical dimension of the mountain. The dynamic composition and the choice of earthy colors testify to the encyclopedic intention of documenting the customs and reliefs of Japan.

This antique illustration is aimed at those who appreciate the history of pilgrimages and sacred geography. It lends itself to a meticulous observation of clothing details and geological formations represented. As a reproduction of a major work, it constitutes a refined decoration element, bringing historical and cultural depth to any interior space.
