Print Mitsui Shops at Suruga-cho - Katsushika Hokusai

This reproduction presents a print by Katsushika Hokusai illustrating the commercial activity of the Mitsui shops in the Suruga-cho district of Edo. The plate offers a rigorous central perspective of the street, framed by buildings, with Mount Fuji appearing perfectly aligned in the background. This dynamic composition captures the urban bustle, including workers on the roofs and passersby, characteristic of 19th-century daily life.

Part of the Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji series (c. 1830), this work is a remarkable example of the integration of Western perspective into ukiyo-e art. Hokusai demonstrates architectural precision and a hierarchy of planes that highlight both the economic success represented by the shops and the spiritual symbol of Fuji. The work on shades of blue and yellow contrasts underlines the clarity of the Japanese master's naturalist observation.

Observing this plate allows for an immersion into the social and architectural history of ancient Japan. It constitutes a choice piece for a thematic collection on urban landscapes or Hokusai's work. This antique poster reproduction fits perfectly into a documentary or decorative setting, bringing historical depth and graphic rigor to the space it occupies.
