Print of Fireworks at Ryōgoku Bridge - Utagawa Hiroshige

This ukiyo-e print reproduction illustrates the nocturnal spectacle of fireworks above the Ryōgoku Bridge in Edo. The composition skillfully uses verticality to contrast the darkness of the night with the luminous flashes of the pyrotechnic rockets. At the foot of the imposing bridge crossing the Sumida River, numerous boats animate the water surface, creating a nocturnal life scene rich in historical and sociological details.

Dated August 1858, this plate is one of the most famous pieces in Hiroshige's series "One Hundred Famous Views of Edo." It commemorates the kawabiraki festival, a river-opening ceremony designed to ward off evil spirits. The work testifies to the artist's genius in capturing atmospheric moods and urban traditions of Japan under the Tokugawa shogunate, shortly before the end of the Edo period.

Through its mastery of shades of blue and striking contrasts, this illustration offers exceptional iconographic value. It is aimed at enthusiasts of urban history and Japanese traditions. As a faithful reproduction, it allows one to appreciate the fineness of line of a master of ukiyo-e and the complexity of the graphic compositions of the era, serving as a narrative focal point in any collection.
