Print of Temple Gardens at Nippori by Utagawa Hiroshige

This reproduction of a Japanese ukiyo-e print illustrates the gardens of the Shūshōin temple in Nippori. The composition, taken from the famous series "One Hundred Famous Views of Edo," offers a plunging view of a spring landscape blending the blossoming of cherry trees and azaleas. The graphic work underlines a harmony between the architectural structures of the temple and the lush vegetation, served by a palette of deep greens, pinks and browns.

Originally created in February 1857 by Utagawa Hiroshige, this work testifies to the artist's mastery in using aerial perspective. The illustration captures a specific moment in the religious and social history of Japan, before the reforms of 1868. The precision of the details, despite the artistic liberties taken with the seasonality of flowers, reflects the encyclopedic intention to document the topography and atmosphere of Edo's emblematic sites.

This naturalist plate constitutes a precious historical document for lovers of oriental art and botany. Its visual clarity and semantic richness make it an ideal study object for an iconographic collection or refined wall decoration. The contemplation of this scene invites a careful reading of the hierarchy of planes and the fineness of line specific to the ukiyo-e school.
