Print Reproduction: Three Stylized Butterflies by Kamisaka Sekka

This plate is a faithful reproduction of a print by Kamisaka Sekka appearing in the collection Chō senshu (1903). It presents three butterflies with distinct colors: an emerald green, an orangey red, and an anthracite gray. Each specimen is represented with geometric and stylized motifs, illustrating the morphological diversity of Lepidoptera through the prism of Japanese decorative art of the Meiji period.

Kamisaka Sekka designed these illustrations inspired by the Rimpa aesthetic, characterized by strong chromatic contrasts and an elegant simplification of natural forms. The original work served as a reference for the artistic motifs of the era, blending the observation of nature with a quest for graphic perfection. The airy arrangement of the insects on the plate makes it possible to appreciate the strength of the line and the hierarchy of colors.

This reproduction is perfectly suited for wall decoration centered on the theme of nature or historical Japan. Its clear graphic composition makes it an easy piece to observe and collect. It is particularly aimed at those who appreciate naturalist illustrations that go beyond the simple scientific framework to become true studies of design and color.
