Pufferfish, Japanese Zoological Illustration by Kōno Bairei

This reproduction presents a zoological study of a pufferfish, from a collection by Japanese artist Kōno Bairei. The illustration captures with remarkable precision the texture of the skin, the arrangement of the fins, and the distinctive shape of the animal. The drawing, both detailed and sleek, testifies to attentive scientific observation, characteristic of the artist's work.

Kōno Bairei (1844–1895) was a master of the kachō-ga genre (paintings of flowers and birds) during the Meiji era. His work is renowned for its ability to marry traditional Japanese aesthetics with an empirical approach to nature. This fish drawing is a perfect example of his approach, creating a work that is both artistically accomplished and zoologically accurate.

This print is ideal for marine biology enthusiasts, collectors of natural history illustrations, or as a singular decorative element. Its targeted subject and minimalist style offer a strong visual point of interest, suitable for a modern cabinet of curiosities or an office.
