Reproduction of a Melethallia Plate by Ernst Haeckel

This reproduction of a naturalistic plate highlights Melethallia, more commonly known as social algae, as presented in the famous collection Kunstformen der Natur. The illustration offers a delicate chromatic study declined in shades of green and yellow, underlining the structural complexity of these primitive marine organisms. The rigorous composition testifies to a desire to classify the living while capturing its intrinsic grace through a stroke of great precision.

The German biologist Ernst Haeckel published this work between 1899 and 1904, marking a major turning point in 19th-century scientific illustration. His visionary approach not only served biological documentation, but also profoundly influenced the aesthetics of Art Nouveau through its organic and symmetrical forms. This plate embodies the perfect fusion between empirical observation and artistic expression of the late Victorian era.

Intended for lovers of natural history and vintage graphics, this illustration constitutes a refined decorative element. Its visual clarity and encyclopedic heritage allow for careful observation of nature's mechanisms. It integrates perfectly into a thematic collection or as a central piece of a modern cabinet of curiosities, offering a timeless testimony to the diversity of the biological world.
