This reproduction of a herpetology plate presents two remarkable reptile species: the Fork-nosed Chameleon and the Two-banded Monitor. The drawing captures with finesse the scaly textures, complex skin patterns, and natural postures of the specimens, all in a harmony of greens, yellows, and browns characteristic of the living creature.
The illustration is extracted from the Dictionnaire Universel d'Histoire Naturelle, published under the direction of Charles d'Orbigny between 1841 and 1849. This encyclopedic work aimed to catalog all zoological knowledge of the era, combining the aesthetics of steel engraving with the rigor of observations by naturalists Duméril and Bibron.
Precise and didactic, this ancient image offers a scholarly look at the world of reptiles. It is perfectly suited for thematic wall decoration or to enrich a collection of scientific reproductions, thereby celebrating the art of 19th-century naturalist illustration.
