This scientific illustration reveals a meticulous naturalist plate depicting the fossilized skull of Palaeotherium crassum. Seen in profile, the bony reliefs and dentition of this extinct mammal are rendered with a keen sense of anatomical detail. The sober palette, declined in shades of beige, brown, and grey, highlights the precision of the line and the documentary rigor of this osteology study.
Taken from the famous Dictionnaire Universel d'Histoire Naturelle directed by Charles d'Orbigny in the 19th century, this engraving is part of the golden age of French paleontology. It testifies to the inventory effort of extinct species initiated by Georges Cuvier and illustrates the expertise of scientific draftsmen of the era.
Intended for lovers of natural history and collector's items, this reproduction of an old poster offers a visual immersion into the fossil world. It finds its ideal place in a cabinet of curiosities or at the heart of an erudite-style wall decoration.
