Shinagawa on the Tōkaidō - Antique print by Katsushika Hokusai

This reproduction of a ukiyo-e print illustrates the landscape of Shinagawa on the Tōkaidō road. The naturalist plate features cherry blossoms in bloom on the hills of Mount Goten-yama, with the silhouette of Mount Fuji standing out against the horizon. The dynamic composition highlights the contrast between terrestrial seasonal animation and the immutable presence of the sacred mountain, treated with great precision of line.

From the famous series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji published around 1830, this work by Katsushika Hokusai bears witness to the mastery of polychrome woodblock printing of the Edo period. The artist explores here the interaction between human activities and the monumental landscape, using a chromatic palette where pink and green tones balance with the bluish nuances characteristic of classic Japanese aesthetics.

This antique illustration is aimed at enthusiasts of Japanese art and iconographic history. It can be observed for the fineness of its composition or collected within a thematic set on the Japanese landscape. Its documentary value and visual modernity make it an ideal medium of contemplation for neat and historic interior decoration.
