This botanical plate reproduction features the alga Sporochnus rhizodes, magnified through the cyanotype process. The fine details and complex ramifications of the marine plant are rendered in pure white against a deep blue background, creating a powerful visual contrast. This piece reflects a meticulous approach to natural observation, transforming a biological sample into a minimalist work of art.
The original work is part of Anna Atkins' monumental project, Photographs of British Algae, produced between 1843 and 1853. Atkins is considered the first female photographer, and her use of cyanotype for scientific illustration paved the way for new technical reproduction methods, combining documentary precision with visual poetry.
This antique print is perfect for enriching wall decoration centered around the theme of the sea or classical botany. It offers a unique opportunity to own a piece of photography history while celebrating the timeless beauty of natural specimens collected on British shores.
