Stylized yellow and gray butterfly plate - Kamisaka Sekka

This reproduction of a Japanese print comes from the collection Chō senshu (A Thousand Varieties of Butterflies), published in 1903. The composition presents a flight of eighteen lepidoptera rendered in flat areas of yellow and gray colors on a neutral cream background. The refined tracing and scattered arrangement of the insects testify to a search for visual balance and suspended movement, characteristic of the naturalist aesthetic of the Meiji period.

The work is signed by Kamisaka Sekka, a central figure in the revival of the Rimpa movement in the early 20th century. Here, the artist favors a decorative approach where the shape of the butterfly is simplified to retain only its graphic essence. This plate perfectly illustrates the transition between traditional Japanese design and the beginnings of modernism, combining observational precision with compositional freedom.

Intended for lovers of Japanese art and sleek graphics, this illustration brings a serene presence to any interior space. Its chromatic sobriety allows for careful observation of stylized morphological details, making this reproduction an object of both historical and decorative contemplation.
