Stylized yellow and white butterfly plate by Kamisaka Sekka

This reproduction illustrates a duo of butterflies treated with great economy of graphic means: one presents yellow wings edged with green, while the second is rendered in white punctuated with green touches. The two specimens are isolated on a neutral beige background, accompanied by original calligraphed texts. This plate is extracted from the collection Chō senshu, published in 1903, which lists a vast typology of lepidoptera motifs.

Artist Kamisaka Sekka uses the codes of the Rimpa movement here to transform the naturalistic subject into a chromatic and structural study. The use of flat color areas without complex gradients and the simplification of organic forms testify to a decorative intention specific to modern Japanese art. The work reflects the author's desire to create a harmonious and timeless visual grammar from the observation of nature.

Intended for collectors of botanical and entomological illustrations, this reproduction highlights the fineness of Sekka's line. It is perfectly suited for a sober display where the clarity of the composition and the elegance of the yellow and white contrasts can be fully appreciated. The piece offers a historical glimpse of Japanese graphic design at the beginning of the 20th century.
