The Entrance of Athens Near Hadrian's Gate, Illustration by Edward Dodwell

This reproduction presents an illustration of the East entrance of Athens, near Hadrian's Gate. The engraving details with precision the architectural elements of the period, notably an ancient Roman aqueduct and the modern enclosure walls built at the end of the 18th century. The composition highlights the superposition of eras, with ancient fragments re-employed in more recent constructions.

Taken from the collection Views in Greece (1821), this plate was created from the drawings of Edward Dodwell, a British traveler and antiquarian. His work aimed to create a visual and archaeological inventory of Greece at the beginning of the 19th century. This view of the entrance of Athens is not only picturesque; it is a historical document on the urban planning and fortifications of the city before major modern transformations.

This illustration will interest amateurs of urban history, classical architecture, and travel narratives. As a decorative element, it offers a historical and authentic perspective on Athens, far from tourist clichés. It is a piece that invites reflection on the durability and transformation of historical cities.
