This reproduction represents the Hatsune riding ground at Bakuro-chō, captured in an original perspective through hanging dyer's fabrics. The scene reveals a fire lookout tower rising amid the pavilions of the stable, under a twilight sky with nuanced hues. The artwork plays on the superposition of planes and the harmony of primary colors softened by the woodblock printing technique.
Published in September 1857, this print belongs to the work "One Hundred Famous Views of Edo." The subject holds a personal dimension for Hiroshige, whose family hereditarily held the position of fire captain. The Hatsune riding ground was then the oldest in Edo. The composition perfectly illustrates the inventiveness of ukiyo-e framing, mixing urban daily life and functional architectural elements.
This landscape and urban view brings a historical and poetic note to any iconographic ensemble. It allows for the contemplation of the balance between wooden structures and floating textile elements, representative of 19th-century Japanese aesthetics. It is a choice piece for the study of Hiroshige's atmospheric perspectives.
