Ukiyo-e print Nihonbashi Bridge under Snow - Hiroshige

This reproduction comes from the monumental series "One Hundred Famous Views of Edo," illustrating the Nihonbashi Bridge during a clearing after a snowfall. The image captures the activity of the merchant district with boats navigating the cold waters, while the iconic silhouette of Mount Fuji stands out on the horizon. The use of the bokashi technique creates a delicate chromatic gradation in the blue tones of the river.

Initially published in 1856 by Utagawa Hiroshige, this polychrome woodblock print highlights one of the nerve centers of old Tokyo. Nihonbashi Bridge, built in 1603, served as the starting point for all distance measurements in the country. The bold perspective and atmospheric treatment of the snow reflect the artist's innovative spirit in the ukiyo-e landscape genre.

This antique illustration is intended for enthusiasts of Japanese iconography. It can be integrated into a collection of topographical views or used as a sober and refined decorative element. The contemplation of this winter scene invites a dive into the daily and geographical history of Edo-period Japan.
