View of the Temple of Medinet Habu in Thebes - David Roberts

This reproduction offers a panoramic view of the Temple of Medinet Habu, located on the west bank of ancient Thebes. The illustration details the structures of the Temple of Ramesses III, showing the entanglement of ancient ruins and more recent dwellings. The presence of human figures and animals in the landscape underlines the life that persisted among these monumental vestiges in the 19th century.

Drawn by David Roberts and published in his major work on Egypt, this lithograph reflects the author's Orientalist and scientific perspective. The work on perspective and the rendering of bas-reliefs demonstrates a desire for exhaustive documentation. The dominant hues of brown and beige restore the characteristic luminosity of the Theban desert site.

Intended for decorative or documentary use, this naturalistic plate is aimed at lovers of Egyptian history and major archaeological expeditions. It allows for a visual immersion in pharaonic architecture and its historical perception. It is a remarkable study medium on the transformation of ancient places of worship over the centuries.
